Biochemical aromatherapy is the term I have coined to describe how essential oils affect the brain and subsequently the symptoms we experience and the moods that we have.
We are a product of our biochemicals, they are the instructions for every action and thought pattern in our body. Without them we could neither think, feel or breathe amongst other things.
When biochemical activity goes awry, then problems start to manifest in the body creating physical symptoms. We could become depressed, agitated, irritable, have mood swings or feel blissfully happy and contented.
Over the last 40 years biochemistry has become so successful at explaining living processes that now almost all areas of the life sciences, from botany to medicine, are engaged in biochemical research. Today the main focus of pure biochemistry is in understanding how biological molecules give rise to the processes that occur within living cells, which in turn relates greatly to the study and understanding of whole organisms.
Essential oils play an important part in influencing the brain and subsequently the whole body.
Lavender is usually, the one oil that, people who are not really into Aromatherapy in a big way, will have in their homes at any one time.
Ask them why they have it, they will say a number of reasons, namely to ‘help me sleep’, ‘to help me relax’, ‘for headaches’ etc.
But why does it have this action?…Lavender seems to influence Tryptophan and serotonin and may explain why it has an affect on people’s sleep. Understanding what enzymes, hormones, neuropeptides for example, an oil influences and works on, gives us a more detailed knowledge of the oil’s actions within us.
Biochemical Aromatherapy attempts to explain how essential oils influence and affect the different parts of the brain and the different biochemicals involved and thereby how it influences the symptoms we suffer from and the moods we have.
